#World Penguin Day: 4 Lessons Small Businesses Can Learn From a Penguin!
Did you know April 25th is the World Penguin Day? Well, I didn’t.
But it came across my Instagram feed, curious, I read about it. Then I read about penguins, and I read some more.
Raise your hand if you love penguins. I mean, who doesn’t. They are such an incredibly adorable & lovely species. So, while reading about them, I realised that while they have many admirable quirks, there are many lessons a small business can learn from a penguin?

A. Be a community member.
Penguins are a closely-knit community. And regardless of the size of your business, this is the fundamental lesson to learn from them.
You must build a team that shares your vision. Also, it helps if you’re a part of a community with which you share interests. All the easier to share ideas, get feedback and build relationships.
B. Loyalty is the way
Most penguins are known to be in a monogamous relationship. Loyalty is one trait they abide. And this trait holds for any mutually beneficial business relationship. For any long term gain, honour your business associations and partnerships. Betrayal & mistrust do no right to business.
C. Teamwork makes it happen
Did you know that a penguin couple shares egg incubation duties? When the female penguin takes care of the eggs, the male penguin goes looking for food. Then, they switch. Lesson learnt. Coordination & teamwork.
As a small business, it helps to have a clear set of responsibilities chalked out for your team & you. Of course, there will be overlaps. But with well-defined roles, you can ensure that there are smoother coordination and better teamwork within your team.
D. Your network is your net worth
Networking is something whose importance can never be stressed enough. Penguins are a very social community, a loud one at that. They are continually interacting with each other.
There’s no better way for your business to grow than to network. It helps meeting with people with varied interests from different walks of life as there’s always something to learn from the other.
So here it is. Who knew a penguin could teach lessons that hold great value for a small business? But they do.
